6th October 2008

Ghassan Hage,
Future Generation Professor of Anthropology and Social Theory
- what an exciting title! -
at University of Melbourne
will holding a seminar titled,
"Taking Hegel To Cronulla Beach: From Recognition to Negotiation”

Friday 10 October
3-5pm
Room E319 Forgan Smith Building
University of Queensland, St Lucia

I've been to a seminar he presented before and enjoyed it immensely. He's wonderfully passionate and articulate and draws great pictures and diagrams.

(Entirely on a tangent, 'Future Generation Professor' makes me think of a character in Marguerite Duras' film, Destroy, She Said. He talks about how, since he is a professor in History of the Future, he has nothing to say to his students, so he says nothing and his students sleep during his class. I thought that was a lovely and funny moment about sleep, dreams and the future.)

28 August 2008

I've been terrifically excited about this, even though it's taken me so long to put this note up -

Currently at University of Queensland,

there are weekly French New Wave films screenings being held concurrently with a continental philosophy course

- on the political in French philosophy and film leading up to May '68 -

but anyone and everyone else is warmly welcome.

We engage in an informal discussion post-screening.

It's already been going for the past fortnight, the first Friday was

La Pointe-Courte - The Short Point (1954) – Agnès Varda

and the second week were the two shorts,

Les Mistons – The Brats (1957) – François Truffaut

&
La Jetée – The Pier (1961) – Chris Marker

(all of which I can't help but highly recommend)

and the rest of the programme is as follows:

UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND ST LUCIA

JAMES FOOT BUILDING 47A ROOM 141 (downstairs)

12-2pm

29 August Les Quatre Cents Coups – The 400 Blows (1959) François Truffaut

5 September Paris nous appartient – Paris belongs to us (1960) Jacques Rivette

12 September Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux – My Life to Live: A Film in Twelve Scenes (1962) Jean-Luc Godard

19 September Cléo de 5 à 7 – Cleo from 5 to 7 (1962) Agnès Varda

26 September Jules et Jim (1962) François Truffaut

18 November 2007

The bi-annual 12x12x12 is on again Friday week.

I'm so proud to have my image on the invite -

I really love this exhibition

there's such a diversity of images and ideas from everybody

it's so fun

it's like going to the record shop

rifling through the racks

and absolutely choosing something just because you like the cover

because that's all you get

the CD you will have to make yourself.

Hope to see you there.

Back to Brisbane:

The Otherfilm Festival begins this Friday 16th.

I've never been before but have heard rapturous reviews about previous years' screenings and sessions.

Screening avant-garde, experimental, abstracted and expanded cinema.

They are also holding some workshops

including one on moving photogram creations

delivered by Kerry Laitala (San Francisco)

this Saturday 17th at QCA.

5 November 2007

I had to compose a little statement about the work below for HK Graphic Art Festival, here it is:

I began drawing on the copper plate on the evening of the blood lunar eclipse in August this year.
It was made in response to the sadness of another

who pushed me away

because I could not comfort.

In hindsight, this is what I had wanted to say:

Loss and pain

is a shadow to be

treasured and caressed;
for it is a fleeting moment
in our orbits.

31 October 2007

'Blue Moon' is exhibiting at Hong Kong Graphic Art Festival 2007 at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 1 - 16 November

City Hall is presently sandwiched between two construction sites.

I am referring to the in-between-wall of City Hall and construction site that-is/used-to-be the city square.
